Rhinoplasty - Nose Job
Rhinoplasty, also referred to as nose job, is a plastic surgery procedure for altering and reconstructing the nose. There are two types of plastic surgery used, cosmetic surgery that changes the appearance of the nose and reconstructive surgery that restores the form and functions of the nose.

Rhinoplasty Techniques and benefits
Mr. Dr. Giovanni Ferrando talks about benefits and risks of rhinoplasty.
Rhinoplasty is one of the most complex procedures in plastic surgery. Mr Ferrando uses both open and closed techniques.
He prefers using the closed technique on primary Rhinoplasty patients and the open technique on secondary, more complex cases of Revision Corrective rhinoplasty.
A closed procedure is where the incision is hidden inside of the nose. An open Rhinoplasty procedure is where the surgeon makes an incision at the bottom of the nose, across columella which is the narrow strip of tissue that separates the nostrils. Through these incisions, skin that covers the nasal bones and cartilage has to be lifted, allowing access to reshape the structure of the nose.
Reason to have a rhinoplasty
There are infinite reasons why women and men of all ages decide to undergo primary rhinoplasty. Some of the most common ones include:
- A nasal bridge with a bump or a hump.
- A nose that isn’t in harmony with the rest of the face by being either too small or too large.
- An exceptionally wide nose
- A drooping nasal tip or a protruding, excessively large, bulbous.
- Pinched or flared nostrils.
- An asymmetrical or crooked nasal structure.
Importance of finding the right surgeon
Choosing a rhinoplasty surgeon is a key factor in the success of your surgery, so it is crucial to take your time and do some research to find a proficient doctor who meets the qualifications to perform your nose operation.
Mr. Giovanni Ferrando prefers using his own hand to draw the nose, rather than using any computer software. This process allows to show the patient the result that they can expect to achieve, and to show the patient which nose shape is most natural for their face with respect to their facial proportions.
He will patiently listen to you during the pre-op consultation and devote a lot of time to make everything clear for you, including the procedure, potential risks, and how to take care of yourself after the surgery.

During open rhinoplasty, Dr Fferrando will create a small, inconspicuous incision at the base of the nose across the columella. This allows him the most access and flexibility in addressing the internal structures of the nose.
During closed rhinoplasty, small incisions are made inside the nostrils, where they are hidden from view. A closed approach may be appropriate for those individuals requiring minimal to moderate changes in nasal structure.
What is the process for deciding the shape of the nose?
The process for a rhinoplasty procedure with leading consultant plastic surgeon Mr. Giovanni Ferrando, starts with the first consultation with the patient.
During this consultation, a photo of the patient’s face is taken, especially focusing on the nose.
This consultation is very important, as it allows both Mr. Ferrando and the patient to discuss exactly what result is possible, and what shape and size of nose is perfect for the patient’s face.
Mr. Ferrando needs to assess exactly what kind of results the patient can achieve and let the patient know if their goals are realistic and possible.
The techniques used to achieve natural looking results will vary from patient to patient.
In time for the second consultation, a drawing of the face with the new nose will be created to discuss with the patient.
How is a natural-looking nose achieved?
The proportions of the face are taken into consideration in a vertical sense, with the nose taking up one third of the face, with one-third for the forehead, and another third for the lower face.
In a horizontal sense, the width of the nose at the base has to be around the same as the distance between the eyes. When Mr. Ferrando draws the nose, it allows the patient to see how the proportions of the nose will appear after surgery.
There is not one nose shape that fits every face. The nose has to match the face of the patient, and the surgeon has to put the maximum effort to find the right nose for every patient. The best compliment the surgeon can receive at the end of the operation is for the patient to say “the new nose looks so natural, it looks as though I was born with it”.

Recovery after nose surgery
After rhinoplasty, patients will need a friend or family member to escort them home and assist them for the first 24-48 hours. Swelling, bruising, and tenderness will peak during the first few days and then gradually subside.
How long until the final results are seen?
A rhinoplasty is a very complex operation. The patient can see the final results following a rhinoplasty after approximately one year on average. This depends whether the rhinoplasty is the first time the nose has been operated on, or whether the patient has had another rhinoplasty in the past. If the patient has had one or more rhinoplasties in the past, then the recovery time can be more than one year.
Sometimes different methods have to be used, such as bone grafts from other parts of the body. In these special cases, the recovery time can be longer. If you are interested in having a rhinoplasty procedure, and would like to learn more, you can make an appointment with a specialist here.
